SDI Open Water Diver Course

Course prerequisites

  • Minimum age, 12 years old for Dive30A training courses

What you can expect to learn:

The SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Course will cover all of the necessary skills and knowledge for open water scuba diving, including:

  • The aquatic environment: vision, light, sound, heat loss, tides, currents, waves, surge, etc.
  • Physics and physiology: buoyancy, pressure, air spaces, breathing compressed air, mixed gases, etc.
  • Dive equipment selection, assembly, use and maintenance
  • Dive planning
  • Basic scuba skills including mask and regulator skills, swimming underwater, buoyancy control, basic rescue techniques, and emergency procedures
  • And much more!

📅 Course Breakdown 

The SDI Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases:


1) eLearning

eLearning can be done at your convenience. All you need is a computer with internet, and a course code we'll provide. All eLearning does have to be completed before you start any in-water training.


2) Confined Water Training (2 days)

- Day 1 > 8am - 3pm
Swim & float tests, familiarization with equipment and how to use it, begin 'skills & drills', plus academics review to "put it all together"

- Day 2 > 8am - 3pm
Complete 'skills & drills' circuit, focused buoyancy work, start exploring the open water environment, begin 'emergency skills', dive computer review


3) Open Water 'Checkout' Dives (2 days)

- Day 3 > 8am - 3pm
more focused buoyancy work, finish up 'emergency skills' & simulated scenarios, plan & execute open water dives 1 & 2, debrief
- Day 4 > 8am - 3pm
~Boat Trip! (conditions permitting)~ plan & execute open water dives 3 & 4, visiting various artificial reef sites in the Gulf, including the Underwater Museum of Art!, final debrief

Our goal is to make you safe, competent, comfortable, and confident in and under the water. 👌

Upon successful completion of the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course, graduates may:

  • Conduct open water dives in conditions similar to their training
  • Continue their dive education by enrolling in SDI Advanced Diver and Specialty courses

SDI Open Water Scuba Diver minimum requirements:

  • Demonstrate mature and sound judgment concerning dive planning and execution
  • Satisfactorily complete the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver knowledge quests or equivalent online learning course
  • Complete all open water requirements safely and efficiently
